Epix Adds Offline Movie Viewing

Netflix decided not to renew their contract with Epix which will run out at the end of September.  Their current agreement has been in place since 2010 so it was a surprise to many viewers when Epix announced they would be moving over to Hulu in the months to come.  It seems that Netflix has decided to focus more on original content rather than spend the money to renew with Epix.  We’re not sure how much it would have cost but they reportedly coughed up $1 billion last time around.

Epix recently announced that they will be adding offline viewing in the weeks to come.  They plan to give viewers access to watch Epix movies even when they aren’t connected via to the internet.  Offline viewing is another area that Netflix has shied away from thus far.  Amazon announced offline viewing a few weeks ago and now it appears that Epix is joining in as well.  It’s not clear yet how many titles Epix will support offline viewing for but they have plenty of popular titles in their line up.  In their press release they mention hit movies like The Hunger Games, James Bond, and Star Trek will be available to download.

“The EPIX goal has always been to provide our subscribers with next level enhancements, elevating how they can access content across devices,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO. “By creating a network first, true TV Everywhere experience, consumers can now download a movie from our library and watch it anywhere, anytime, even without a Wi-Fi connection – while waiting at the airport, traveling by train, commuting to work, or even on a camping trip. Consumers now have guaranteed content mobility.”

Epix is planning a marketing blitz with several of their distributors which include cable, satellite, and communication companies.  I’m sure we’ll hear more about their new offline viewing feature in the weeks to come.  We’ll make sure to share the launch date and any other exciting news from Epix.  In the meantime get ready to watch their movies anywhere, anytime.  Epix offline viewing will support a wide range of platforms including all iOS and Android devices.
